Armed thieves looking to rob an Irish betting shop get more than they bargained for when an 83-year-old man takes charge and helps the staff fight back.

The armed robbery of a betting shop in Glanmire, Cork, was foiled on September 15 when 83-year-old Denis O’Connor fought back the would-be thieves. During the incident, which took place at Bar One Racing, O’Connor wielded a stool against the attackers who were armed with hammers and a shotgun.

CCTV footage shows how O’Connor and manager Tim Murphy held off the thieves, and forced them out of the store

FEARLESS have a go great grandad Denis O’Connor was hailed a hero yesterday after tackling three armed men trying to rob his local bookies.

The pair with hammers climbed over the desk to confront shop manager Tim Murphy, while the apparent gunman pointed his weapon at the handful of gamblers in the shop at the time.

But Mr O’Connor, a retired mechanic-fitter from Glanmire, ignored the weapon and calmly walked behind the desk to help Mr Murphy.

Even the sight of a shotgun being pointed in his face didn’t deter 83-year-old Denis from tackling the young thugs while in Bar One Racing in Glanmire, Co Cork on Saturday evening.
