Authorities said a grocery store cashier was killed, and two others were injured in a shooting in the Atlanta region on Monday after an incident over wearing face masks in the supermarket.

Sheriff Melody Maddox of DeKalb County stated the incident happened inside the Big Bear Supermarket in Decatur, where several people were gathered. A female cashier was killed when a man opened fire.

“There was some confrontation, argument—I’m not sure exactly what—in reference to the wearing of masks, at which time the subject pulled out a weapon and shot the cashier,” Maddox stated at a press conference.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the afternoon tragedy occurred at a Big Bear supermarket in DeKalb when a worker asked Victor Tucker Jr., 30, to wear a mask due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Tucker refused and got into an argument with the woman before leaving the store without making a purchase, the report and GBI stated.

Authorities said the man then barged back inside and shot her in the head. GBI reported in a press release that the cashier, who has not been identified, was subsequently pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital.

“Tucker walked directly back to the cashier, pulled out a handgun and shot her,” in a news release, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation stated.

A retired officer, who was working security at the store as a part-time reservist with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, leaped in and returned fire, said Cynthia Williams, the DeKalb Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. As a result, both Tucker and the ex-deputy, a 30-year veteran of the department, were hit by gunfire, authorities said.

According to Maddox, the deputy was hit by two bullets, but he was wearing a bulletproof vest and was brought to a medical hospital in stable condition. Tucker is also in stable condition, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The agency said a second cashier was grazed by a bullet, and her injuries were treated at the scene.

Authorities believed the supermarket is near The Gallery at South DeKalb mall, although it is not a tenant of that complex. The GBI also claimed an independent inquiry into the shooting is proceeding.
