For several months, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) planned a major nationwide law enforcement operation to arrest illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes. But according to reports, the process was canceled following the relaxation of immigration policies announced by President Biden.
According to the Washington Post, Operation Talon was the name of the large raid that involved thousands of hours of preparation by law enforcement officials to identify targets and obtain warrants.
According to a source familiar with the operation, ICE agents canceled the raid the night before it was scheduled. While no official would admit that the decision was due to any order from the White House, it just so happens that the cancellation came on the heels of the president’s announcements about suspending deportation of immigrants, easing controls, and promising citizenship for illegal immigrants.
Historically, ICE is an agency that moved with sufficient independence, always linked to the Department of Homeland Security guidelines. However, the measures adopted by Biden inevitably imply an intervention in ICE’s work, which could be harming its freedom to work according to its plans and objectives.
Critics argue that Biden’s policies are also resulting in the restart of the “catch and release” program, a process in which illegal aliens are released into the U.S. after being detained.
Joe Biden issued a 100-day “pause” to all illegal aliens’ deportations within 24 hours of his “swearing-in.”
While ICE’s new operational plans are not yet final, senior officials’ tentative instructions would point to a significant change in policy. For the time being, agents will no longer deport immigrants for minor offenses, even if they do not have documentation to reside in the United States.
As reported by the Washington Post, ICE officials lament that “the proposed changes will take away agents’ discretion and severely limit their ability to arrest and deport criminals.”
“They’ve abolished ICE without abolishing ICE,” said one distraught official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because that person was not authorized to talk to the media. “The pendulum swing is so extreme. It literally feels like we’ve gone from the ability to fully enforce our immigration laws to now being told to enforce nothing.”
Due to measures aimed at weakening law enforcement’s power by the new administration, widespread fear is beginning to manifest itself in society due to the increase in street crime, such as robberies, violence, and murders.
