In a troubling move, Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) proposes that the Pentagon analyze all its service members’ social media habits for possible “extremist,” i.e. pro-Trump, tendencies.

“It’s not a new thing, but I will tell you that I have seen over the last probably two decades this growing radicalization of a portion within the military,” said Duckworth, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, according to media outlet Revolver News on March 29.

Duckworth believes that this alleged radicalization is caused by the exchanges that occur when using social media.

However, a Revolver News investigation notes that the FBI is already applying what it calls “creepy ‘Sentiment Analysis’ tools,'” which it assumes have been used since the Jan. 6 riots to exclude Trump supporters from the National Guard, even though members of the Marxist group Antifa infiltrated the Capitol.

Specifically, the FBI would be using the surveillance and sentiment analysis tool “Babel Street”, which evaluates citizens’ affiliations to different narratives or subcultures in a short time.

This software: “possess the most sophisticated sentiment analysis tool on the market. Derived from collaboration with top university linguistic programs, Babel Street boasts the ability to evaluate sentiment in 19 languages—far exceeding the capacity of any other competitor,” describes Vice.

The app’s capability also allows it to simultaneously translate messages from 200 languages, which it takes from some 25 social networks, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

It can also set users’ geographic locations, and perform custom searches for which it uses filters such as hashtags, emojis, names, keywords, and credit card or social security numbers.

Babel Street is also used by the military’s Special Operations Command, the Australian Attorney General’s Office, and other defense and surveillance agencies.

Some netizens believe it would not be unusual if very few National Guard members were left in service to the Biden Administration if they were vetted and excluded because of their sympathies for former U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Is Biden trying to dissolve our National Guard and armed forces?” tweeted Twitter user @MaineLogic.

On the other hand, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is criticized for taking advantage of Capitol Hill’s riots on Jan. 6 to escalate a repressive law against “domestic terrorists,” which she had already been preparing since last year.

Democrats in both the House and Senate repackaged legislation that had already been introduced in 2020 to ban MAGA (Make America Great Again) demonstrations in favor of then-President Donald Trump and reclassify them as “domestic terrorism.”

Given that the MAGA movement constitutes the most significant political force opposed to the Democrats, the action is interpreted as an act of criminalizing the opposition in the best communist style.

Journalist and writer Paul Sperry wrote on Jan. 11 on his Twitter account:

“Democrats in both the House and Senate are planning to draft legislation to classify MAGA rallies as ‘domestic terrorist activity’ and require the FBI, DOJ & DHS to take steps to prevent such ‘domestic terrorism.’ Senator Durbin is leading the effort along with Representative Schneider.”
