New documents released Sept. 6 confirm that the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) led by Dr. Fauci funded the dangerous gain-of-function research conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) that many point to as the origin of the coronavirus and the pandemic, the New York Post reported.
Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul, who previously clashed with Dr. Fauci in a Senate hearing, used his Twitter account to aim again at President Joe Biden’s doctor.
“Surprise, surprise —Fauci lied again.
And I was right about his agency’s funding for new Coronavirus research in Wuhan.
Read this thread and the documents released,” the senator wrote.
The report pointed to by Senator Paul is an article from The Intercept, a news outlet that obtained the documentation after filing a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the National Institutes of Health, or NIH.
The documentation includes submissions made by the NIH to justify the grant to EcoHealth Alliance, an NGO led by Peter Daszak, who adamantly denied that the virus could have originated at the Wuhan lab.
In a session with the Senate, Fauci denied that the NIH through his department had funded what is known as ‘gain-of-function research,’ whereby a biological agent is modified and, in the case of a virus, could increase its transmissibility or virulence.
But new documents published by The Intercept appear to disprove Dr. Anthony Fauci.
One of the key details revealed by the new evidence is that of the $3.1 million NIH funding for bat coronaviruses awarded to EcoHealth Alliance between 2014 and 2019, it included ‘$599,000 that the Wuhan Institute of Virology used in part to identify and alter bat coronaviruses likely to infect humans.’
“Fieldwork involves the highest risk of exposure to SARS or other CoVs, while working in caves with high bat density overhead and the potential for fecal dust to be inhaled,” NIAID warns in one of the documents.
To approve the grant, NIAID notes that before ‘further altering the mutant viruses,’ it needs to receive a ‘detailed description of the proposed alterations and supporting evidence for the anticipated phenotypic characteristics of each virus.’
According to Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University, the documents contain critical information about the research conducted at Wuhan, including the creation of new viruses. “The viruses they constructed were tested for their ability to infect mice that were engineered to display human type receptors on their cell.”
Rand Paul reiterated that he would seek to have Dr. Anthony Fauci prosecuted for failing to tell the truth during his Senate testimony.
“I have already asked the DOJ to review Fauci’s testimony for lying to Congress,” Rand wrote. “This report should make it abundantly clear that he needs to be held accountable,” the senator wrote on his Twitter account.
In his congressional testimony, Dr. Fauci admitted that NIH funded the Wuhan lab. However, he denied the funds were used for gain-of-function research, which could have created a coronavirus capable of infecting humans.
