Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) responded to MSNBC’s Joy Reid calling him a “patina of diversity” and a “token wrong” on Monday’s broadcast of FNC’s “Fox News Primetime.”

Reid’s reason for referring to Scott in this way, Scott explained to guest host Trey Gowdy, was to legitimize the so-called COVID relief program, which he referred to as a “progressive payment plan.”

He said, “Let me just say this on what you just said, woke supremacy is as bad as white supremacy.”

Scott also said that is something we must take seriously. And to anyone who opposes common sense. Matthew 5:44 [Bible reference] can also be read over and over again.

“But to the COVID relief package, let me just say this: It is not a COVID relief package. It’s more of a progressive payment plan because it pays everybody, it pays cities, it pays states, it pays prisoners,” he added.

He gave this example—California, which is expected to have a $19 billion surplus, will receive $40 billion from a $350 billion fund set aside to assist states in need.

“If you don’t need help, you shouldn’t get it,” Scott continued.

And he asked Trey why is the taxpayer, or all taxpayers, supporting and subsidizing blue states with surpluses. Vaccines receive 1% of the budget, and COVID relief receives less than 10%.

Scott continued, “In other words, as Bernie Sanders said, this is the most progressive piece of legislation to pass the Senate since he’s been a Senator that says a lot when you make Bernie Sanders blush over progressive policies.”

In 2013, Scott was appointed by then South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to take retiring Sen. Jim DeMint’s seat when he stepped aside to become president of conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation.

After winning a special election in 2014, he formally retained his seat, and in 2016, he secured his first full term election. In 2022, he is up for re-election.

Scott is the first African American to be elected to the United States Senate from the state of South Carolina.
