Chinese blacklisted video surveillance technology is being used in a top-secret laboratory in the United Kingdom.

People familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that the UK’s Health Security Agency is now using the Chinese surveillance camera—Hikvision—at laboratories.

The UKHSA is in Porton Down, England. This science hub focuses on two crucial areas: defense and health, and this lab is also used to research vaccines and deadly diseases.

People who wish to remain anonymous said that Hikvision equipment has been present in laboratories since February, and they are not sure if it is still there. The Health Security Agency has been using many of these technologies.

UKHSA and Hikvision both refused to comment on the matters. Hikvision said that the company does not sell directly to international markets.

In March, Professor Fraser Sampson, the UK’s Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner, referred to the surveillance of Uighurs in Xinjiang.

He has publicly called on the UK public sector not to work with surveillance companies accused of violating human rights abuses.

Sampson said, [quote] “How much tax revenue should we hand to the surveillance companies that are owned and controlled by the same state which the Tribunal found to have been directly responsible for genocide using their surveillance technology to perpetrate it?” [end quote]

In the meantime, the Biden administration is expected to target the Hikvision company. The U.S. has long accused Hikvision of helping the Chinese regime with surveillance cameras and facial recognition technology in persecuting one million Uighurs in the north-western region of Xinjiang.
